My 5 Favorite Love Stories

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I’ve been thinking about romance novels and I can’t say I’m knowledgable when it come to that genre.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read my fair share of romance novels (even venturing into what some may call “weird” erotica.) I firmly believe there’s a time and place for everything, including trashy books!

When it comes to literary love stories, my tastes run the whole gamut, so here are my Top 5.

  1. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

This is one of my all time favorite novels. It’s a sweeping love story presented in an unbelievable premise. But eventually, you start to believe, which is part of the beauty and skill of the writing. Gut-wrenchingly sad at times, and  wonderfully sweet in others, this is an epic novel worth the heartache.

PS. The book is SO MUCH BETTER than the movie. (Duh)

2. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

I know I’ll probably take some heat for this one, and I don’t care. I absolutely love this book, I’ve read it three times. I’m not saying it’s high quality literature, and the movie definitely sucks, but this book really did something for me. It’s kinda corny but Edward and Bella’s romance is relatable. It’s been a while since I was a teenaged girl, but I’ll never forget that feeling of being smitten, thinking I was in love, and then discovering a bombshell, or something that made the relationship “forbidden.” I felt compelled to continue the series, and I wish I hadn’t.

3. Love Walked In by Maria De Los Santos

Everything this author writes is lovely. This novel is the perfect mixture of heartache and hope. The core of this novel is not exactly the romance which sparks the story. It’s a different kind of love, exploring the concept of family, love, and loyalty.

4. Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer

Delilah is a loner who prefers the company of books to people. One book in particular, a fairy tale she should have outgrown years ago, still brings her joy. Then one day, her charming favorite character, Prince Oliver actually speaks to her! He’s trapped by his literary existence and wants Delilah’s help to escape to the real world. What follows is a uniquely sweet story, and a charming romance. The sequel, Off the Page, is even better than this one, as it expands on the concept of romantic love and explores family and friendships as well.

5. Voyager by Diana Gabaldon

The third in the Outlander series, this is my favorite so far and the most romantic. Jamie and Claire’s love story is the most epic I’ve ever encountered in literature and has changed my views on traditional romance novels. While Outlander is far from traditional, the romance (and let’s be honest, sex scenes) are pivotal to the development of the story.

What are you favorite literary love stories? Are they romance novels or something different?
