What I Read This Week: June 26, 2022
I’ve had a lot going on this week and I just realized I only finished two books!
The Mommy Clique by Barbara Altamirano
Contemporary fiction
I never imaged I’d enjoy a book full of unlikable characters! In fact, I almost quit early on because they’re all so awful. But I stuck with it because I was curious about how it would pan out. It didn’t go exactly as I’d hoped but it was definitely a wild ride. These women are absolutely unbearable. When Beth moves back to her home town, she tries to befriend the other moms at the bus stop. The group is lead by their Queen bee, who is probably a psychopath. These women are “friends” yet they manipulate and back stab each other all the time. There’s some good humor here and the writing is solid. I recommend this one for readers of contemporary fiction. I was gifted my copy of this book from the author, all opinions are my own.
Birds of California by Katie Cotugna
Contemporary romance
This was an enjoyable read though it wasn’t anything ground breaking. The author incorporates the #MeToo movement, but it came a bit too late and was vague early on. I would have liked to seen it addressed sooner and head on. Fiona is a former child star who had a “breakdown” and now lives in obscurity. When the series she starred in is potentially up for a reboot, her former co-star Sam comes around to try to talk her into doing the show. I enjoyed both of these characters, they had some really funny moments and hot sex scenes. They also each had their own journey separate from being together, which I always appreciate in romance novels. I recommend it for readers of the genre, some will like it more than I did.
