How To Combat Creative Block

During the course of this Ultimate Blog Challenge, there have been a few days when I didn’t feel like writing. Even though I had a list of topic ideas, I didn’t feel like pursuing any of them, and I couldn’t come up with any new ideas.

I don’t experience writer’s block in the traditional sense. I can always write. Always. This is because I’m never lacking in thoughts.

Where I struggle is with the creative portion. I can write out my thoughts and feelings all day long, even turn them into an essay. But when it comes to fulfilling an assignment, writing on a specific topic, or creating a new idea, I can get stuck.



My creativity is like any other part of my body. The more I exercise it, the easier it is to use it. However it also has to be given breaks and treated with kindness. If I try to force it, I only end up frustrated and grumpy.

Over the years, I’ve discovered a few surefire ways to treat myself well and get stagnant energy flowing again.

How To Combat Creative Block


Move your body Most often for me, this is going for a walk or a bike ride. Sometimes it’s weeding my garden, or doing some stretching. Whenever possible, going outside is preferred, especially if it’s sunny.


Take a shower I’ll do this even when I don’t “need” a shower. If I’m feeling particularly low or stuck, I’ll use sea salt to scrub my body. A shower always makes me feel better and I have at least one idea in there. The Shower Effect is a real thing, look it up!


Listen to music I’ve created Spotify playlists to accompany just about every mood and activity. Sometimes just listening to my favorite bands can be a reset button of sorts. It gets my heart rate up, releases some dopamine, and usually gets me feeling motivate to do or create.


Dress for success I have this shirt I’ll wear when I’m planning to do something that’s going to make me super happy (a concert, for example.) I’ve found it helps me shake off the potential buzzkills (like someone’s cigarette smoke floating into my face or a jerk trying to cut the line) and stay focused on being where I am, having this opportunity to have a wonderful experience.

I have other pieces of clothing I use in similar ways. And sometimes I will dress “nice” and fix my hair and makeup simply for the little mood boost it provides.

    I think I will try some of them. I usually just scroll through my social media sites for inspiration lol.

    This is a great list, Ramona! Me, I take a break from what I’m doing and do anything, mostly playing the guitar and singing along, or browsing Karaoke music on YouTube and sing, moving around a lot to shake off tension in my body.
    By the way, I love how you write your post using simple words. They work for me!

    I don’t think I have creative blocks ever, but it’s a question of which creative side of me that gets the steering wheel.
    I’m an opera singer, I blog, I love putting programs together & creating memes. I’m a coach and therapist too. Personal evolvement is always exciting and how to guide people forward. I bounce back and forth and that in itself gets the creative juices flowing.

    These are all great ideas to combat a creative block! In college, I used to declare, “Everything changes after a shower!” because the Shower Effect IS real (never heard of it before now but totally believe!!). I use that one and I also leave the computer and do something else.

    These are good tips. Sometimes I take a power nap and wake up refreshed and ready to write again. Sometimes I just write ideas or do word association about the topic I need to write about and often I turn to Bach to tune my brain and diffuse Rosemary oil to help me focus. I always make my deadlines regardless of whether I have a difficult start or not.

    Thank you, Ramona, for great ideas on how to get the creative juices flowing, when they are well and truly ‘stuck’. I find washing the car helps when I’m stuck for ideas. The benefit is, I hate washing the car, so it comes down to the lesser of two evils. When faced with that choice, the creative juices usually show up, and stick around long enough for me to ‘create’. Needless to say, the car is in desperate need of a wash, most of the time.

    I’ve had writers block from time to time on the challenge and times I can’t come up with anything to go with the suggested topic. I never thought of combating the problem, I just keep thinking. But one thing I do is look through my photos since I can get ideas from them!

    I love it. I call that “productive procrastination’! Whenever my husband comes home to find me doing housework, he knows I’m procrastinating on a writing project. But at least it’s movement and we get things done, right?!

    I almost added Rest to the list. Often I don’t even have to actually sleep/nap, but just lying down and giving myself permission to rest can be hugely regenerative. I also love Rosemary oil to boost focus. I’ll often diffuse it with Lemon. I have a bunch of Spotify playlists that are instrumental music for boosting creativity and productivity. I find them very helpful
